Why, why, why are the community's needs so subordinate to the self serving actions of it's employees? We are so terribly penalized that the community should arise and demand a significant change. Fire all of them and start over.
I agree with John Werneken. Separation of school and state NOW!
This report confirms all the people who hate public school and what a corporate model, charter schools. The report ignores ineffective principal who fail to support classroom teachers and are bullied by parents. Also, community economic are ignored and the responsibility of the district to continue professional training and accountability. Classroom size, teacher pay are distant concerns. Maybe the highly profitable oil industry could serve as a business model for education.
And in the meantime UTLA decided to have a "convention" at a pricey resort in the desert. Merit pay should be earned, but who decides who the good teacher is in order to give merit pay? The only solution I see is to dismantle the Dept of Ed and put it back locally, not the state, but truely local. Vouchers would help as well....as a parent, I want to decide where to send my child to school....
I agree with much in the report, but think there is an additional problem I never see stated, the fact that LAUSD and school systems in general promote to administrative levels teachers who were often poor at teaching. These people wind up being the so-called administrative leaders within the system, a case of the blind leading the sighted, or at least semi-sighted. This is one of several reasons why the fewer administrators the better, which in turn means the smaller the system is the better (with some caveats, of course).
Perhaps we should give Mr Duffy what he wants: kill public education. Period. No more government owned k-12. Take the public schol tax and give a equal voucher for each kid...useable at any school whatsoever that the parent(s)/guardian(s) approve.
I'm with Duffy. The idea that education will be improved if it's market-drive is ludicrous.
This article, much like the report it discusses, is specious and fact-free. NCTQ is little more than a poorly regarded right-wing think tank that writes reports around a priori conclusions. Moreover, the CCSA proxies groups that "commissioned" the LAUSD report are funded by the same anti-public education oligarchs who fund both the NCTQ and the report the screed above discusses. Let's also bear in mind where Sand writes "well-meaning philanthropists," the reality based community reads as "ideologically charged plutocrats."
